Sabbath, January 7, 2012

The First Sabbath of the year found us gathered for a day of spiritual-strengthening endeavors and praising the Lord for his continued goodness.

Brother Leon Holt lead out in our adult Sabbath School and the study was on why Jesus has not come yet. This theme will be continued next week.

Our youth Sabbath School studied koala bears and the spiritual lessons we can learn from them and then concluded its study of the New Testament by reviewing the spread of Christianity in the early centuries, with a focus on the Waldenses. Next Sabbath we will begin a study on the reformers, starting with John Wycliffe, the Morning Star of the Reformation. We hope you will join us Sabbath morning at 9:40 am EST, if you are able, and you do so by calling the conference phone line that we use for the worship service. We also offer an Internet classroom with colorful PowerPoint presentations to accompany the lessons. You may view the lesson slide show by clicking here and the pictures of koalas and eucalyptus trees by clicking here.

The classroom URL is www.webmeetinglogin.com/go/sdhcf/ss. You will need to sign in under the guest tag-using a first name is fine-and that gets you into the classroom to follow along with the slideshows.

In the left column we have some of the pictures used in the nature story and lesson. Aren't they beautiful? Do you wonder how they relate to the story? Meet with us this coming week to see more beautiful pictures and how they teach spiritual lessons!

The worship service began with prayer and the opening song was Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken. After prayer requests and intercessory prayer Sister Onycha Holt shared a  youth story about Laura Bridgman who became blind and deaf at age three due to scarlet fever and how she learned to do many things including reading the book of Psalms and writing poetry.  Her best-known poem is called Holy Home.

Heaven is holy home.
Holy Home is from ever
lasting to ever lasting.
Holy home is Summery.
Holy home shall endure
forever...

You may hear this very sweet and interesting story by clicking here.

The message of the day was entitled “The Ultimate Sacrifice.” This message was not about what Jesus did, for that was truly the ultimate sacrifice, but rather focused upon his followers’ ultimate sacrifice in giving their lives physically, but even more so, spiritually in dying to self. The key texts were Matthew 23:34, 35 and Romans 6:1-6. You may hear this message by clicking here. Click here for a PDF that goes along with this sermon.

Hope you can join us next Sabbath for either junior Sabbath School, worship, or both!
